Overview
Seamlessly switches out images on Retina and other high pixel density screens with @2x versions.
The switch happens server side saving on HTTP requests.
No action is required on your part other than to activate it and to regenerate your thumbnails with the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin.
Plugin automatically:
- Detects a HighDPI screen such as a Retina display
- Detects all image sizes added using add_image_size() and adds @2x versions.
- Replaces featured thumbnails and content images with the @2x versions for users with HighDPI screens.

It makes such a difference to have images in retina resolution while not slowing down with enormous images for those who have regular screens.

Works great, but conflicts with WooCommerce

The Simple WP Retina plugin does as advertised and swaps out images on retina devices to images 2x the size. It’s perfect for getting rid of those fuzzy effing thumbnails.
One little problem though, it doesn’t play well with all the different thumbnailed product images in WooCommerce. So I had to disable it.
I have pretty high hopes for this product because it certainly will save me a lot of time when the WooCommerce bug is fixed. So even though I deactivated it, I’m keeping it installed so I can see what updates are made and keep an eye on it.
If you’re not running WooCommerce and want a retina ready WP site, do yourself a favour and install this plugin.
